Kriti Sharma holds an MBA from ICFAI Business School and interned with UrbanDart this Summer in our Hyderabad office. She joined us a sales novice but we now believe that she can put a seasoned professional to shame! Kriti continues to be an ambassador at UrbanDart and makes us proud each day with her work. When she isn’t busy making a sale, Kriti spends her time reading a book or exploring new places.
Why did you choose to intern at a startup instead of a well-established firm?
I worked with Tata Consultancy Services prior to my MBA and understand what it is like to work with big firms. I chose to work for a startup such as UrbanDart because I wanted to see the other side of things as well. I was curious and wanted to better understand how startups function – the culture, ways working, challenges and so on. I was keen on understanding the difference between working for a large well established company and working for a new company. Furthermore, the product is quite innovative and global. All these factors combined with a great team made it an obvious choice.
Tell us a little about your learnings from the UrbanDart internship experience
UrbanDart gave me a platform to experiment, experience and push my limits in the field of sales. Right from cold calling to winning a deal, I gained exposure to all stages of the sales cycle. I had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of campaigns, and I now understand what it takes to do B2B and B2C sales. UrbanDart also gave me the opportunity to interact with upcoming start-ups as well as established brands. I have now developed an understanding of customer perception and the importance of being flexible to meet ever changing customer needs. The internship gave me an opportunity to take a lead of things and accomplish tasks. Overall, it was a fantastic learning experience.

What skills or personality traits do you believe contribute most to success in Sales and Marketing?
David Ogilvy said, “The worst fault a salesman can commit is to be a bore. Foster any attempt to talk about other things; the longer you stay the better, you get to know the prospect, and the more you will be trusted”. I believe that persistence and creativity go a long way in making a sale happen. It takes a minimum of four follow up calls on an average to get the first appointment with a customer. Each product has its own conversion cycle time and every transaction is different. So be patient and keep following up until the final conversion takes place. Apart from these, flexibility and good communication skills are also important.
How was it working with the team at UrbanDart?
I have one word for the team at UrbanDart – Awesome. Nithin, the founder, is a brilliant mentor and a true inspiration. He pushed me into handling situations that I did not know I could handle. He often gave me the liberty to own tasks and see them through completion. This gave me a sense of ownership and an opportunity to experiment and learn. The team is highly passionate about UrbanDart and the energy levels are commendable. The enthusiasm and the “can do” attitude go a long way in sales. Problem solving takes on a whole new meaning at UrbanDart. Each time there is a difficult situation, the team brainstorms and the next steps are very strategically taken. Everyone at UrbanDart is truly involved!
UrbanDart is also a super fun place to work. The team has a good number of food fanatics and they never let the rest of us go hungry. The numerous team lunches and team events made sure that we were fully fed at all times (Laughs). As an after-work ritual, on many evenings, the team would gather on the office terrace for a mini tea party with the stunning Hyderabad skyline as the backdrop. I think it is safe to say that I now have a second family at UrbanDart.
